Growing fears around sinking ship off Sri Lanka

There are growing fears of an environmental disaster off the coast of Sri Lanka, as the Singapore-registered X-Press Pearl settles on the seabed.

The 186-metre ship, which is laden with chemicals and hundreds of tons of fuel, has been on fire for over two weeks just outside the port of Colombo, and the Sri Lankan and Indian navies have been working together to try and put it out, and also stop the vessel from breaking up.

However, the operation has been hampered by stormy weather.

It appears the stern has now hit the seabed, and it is now a battle to prevent any widescale pollution.
